Process of Becoming
I am an abstract artist working as a painter, printmaker, and collagist. My work draws inspiration from music, textiles, and the natural world. I toggle between mixed media collage and acrylics on canvas. Whatever the medium, I’m drawn to color, rhythms and beats, and the tension between stability and instability. I have a deep love and respect for handmade things and I allow that belief to guide me in the construction of my paintings — the artist’s hand always present with the objective of creating an evocative and engaging surface that invites connection.
My compositions have a cadence and musical sensibility. Using the grid as the underlying foundation, the works can begin with an arrangement of squares, rectangles, lines and patterns moving across the picture plane creating rhythms and movement in time and space. Whether I'm working in collage or painting, the process of moving through a painting and allowing it to develop organically is the basis of my practice. The paintings develop over time through “call and response,” where the history of its making is essential to the gestalt. There is no quick, direct route to arriving at a resolution or fullness of being. Give and take, gains and losses, are part and parcel to the process. It's all about engaging in a creative process that allows for growth, transformation, and potential. Every painting is its own journey where the “process of becoming” is the essence of the work and the creative process offers a unique opportunity to seek equilibrium, beauty, and joy, while embracing the imperfections of what it means to be human. Practicing art is practicing living.
